EPWP workers obtain Environmental Practice qualifications

It’s time to celebrate as the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) recruits who participated in the City’s Special Cleaning Project, also known as the 21 Pilots, graduate and receive their valuable qualifications.
The City of Cape Town is pleased to announce that 938 EPWP recruits working in the City's Special Cleaning Project have successfully completed their NQF-2 level qualifications in Environmental Practice while working on the project. Their efforts were recognised in a graduation ceremony held on Friday, 7 July 2023, at Hugo Lambrecht Music Centre in Parow. The ceremony was attended by Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, and he was joined by the CEO of Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA), Mr Ineeleng Molete.
The Special Cleaning Project, was implemented and designed to form part of the City's waste minimisation strategy to ensure that waste is repurposed and only non-recyclables are transported to landfill. The 21 Pilot project functioned in 21 area's across the metro, cleaning communities and illegal hotspot areas.
The recruits were enabled to study this module through a partnership with the LGSETA. The Environmental Practice course provides EPWP candidates with the necessary skills, knowledge and values to make wise and practical use of our waste management environment, natural resources and ecological systems. It also prepares candidates to engage productively and responsibly in environmental science, environmental management and waste management, whether in their work, individual pursuits or community activities. This qualification serves as a foundation for further learning. It equips learners with the knowledge, skills and values needed to actively participate in society and contribute to the development of sustainable communities.
'With high levels of unemployment in our country, the City is working hard to ensure that we use EPWP opportunities to close this gap through skills development. We now ensure that every EPWP opportunity is coupled with a training program. The graduates are now in a better position to find a foothold in this growing industry,' said Alderman Twigg.
